Kahimi Karie and The Cruel Grand Orchestra

mike alway's diary

1992 CD5 : Crue-l KYTHMAK 003D

1. Mike Alway's Diary (Japanese)
2. Mike Alway's Diary
3. Get Out Of Your Lazy Bed
4. Shower To Shower

first release. Mike Alway is a hip British A&R guy. Shower to Shower sounds like a TV commercial song.

girly

1994 CD5 Crue-l KYTHMAK011D
  1. Candyman
  2. Lolita Go Home
  3. Porque Te Vas
  4. Still Be Your Girl

Kahimi Karie sings Momus in Paris

1995 CD5: Crue-l KYTHMAK-015D

1. I am a kitten
2. Vogue Bambini
3. Giapponese a Roma
4. Nikon 2
5. The poisners

Momus talks about these tracks here. He has released his own sung demo versions of these and other Karie tracks for his own albums. Very continental and worthwhile. I think this was released in Spain also.

tiny monster

9612.11 CD3: Eastworld TODT-3889 (full size case)
  1. tiny monster
  2. tiny monster (space accordion mix)
  3. quando sentirai da sola
Tiny Monster is Tiny King Kong sung in Japanese. track 2 is a different instrumental version. track 3 isn't Karie related (she sings it on a compilation album, but on here its just an instrumental). Coba is a Japanese accordion virtuoso (worked with Björk) . The track is the most electronic styled song KK has done. Sort of a Blade Runner feel. Superbly done.

Tiny King Kong

1997 CD: KYTHMAK029D, 12": KYTHA29
  1. Tiny King Kong
  2. Lolitapop Dollhouse (Loop Mix 2)
  3. Superfreak (acoustic)
  4. David Hamilton
I assume the 12" is the same as the CD5 single, I never saw the 12".

(remixes)

  1998 CD: Crue-l KYTHMAK-038D
  1. Fruit Paradise
  2. Superfreak (Sweet Robots Remix)
  3. David Hamilton (St. Etienne Remix)
  4. Superfreak (Sweet Robots Reprise)
(*) 1998 12" KYTHA-38
  1. Superfreak (Sweet Robot Remix)
  2. Superfreak (Sweet Robot Instrumental)
  3. David Hamiltom (Saint Etienne Remix)
  4. Superfreak (Sweet Robot Reprise)

Fruit Paradise (non album) sounds like a nice CM song. It seems to be the last collaboration between KK and Cornelius to be released. Sweet Robots is Towa Tei.

KAHIMI KARIE (U.S. compilation)

Kahimi Karie TRATTORIA BEST (Japanese title)

(this is a Minty Fresh release in the U.S. )

(@) 98.9.30 (Japan) PSCR-5708, Minty Fresh (USA)
  • GOOD MORNING WORLD
  • CANDYMAN
  • ELASTIC GIRL
  • MIKE ALWAY'S DIARY
  • LE ROI SOLEIL
  • TAKE IT EASY MY BROTHER CHARLIE
  • ZOOM UP!
  • SERIEUX COMME LE PLAISIR
  • LOLITAPOP DOLLHOUSE
  • DIS-MOI QUELQUE CHOSE AVANT DE DORMIR
  • WHEN YOU CLOSE YOUR EYES

Since KK didn't release an album proper for her early years it is pretty useful to have a best of of this material for those who don't have a bunch of singles and EPs, and of course its good to see a compilation album finally released in the U.S. Its pointed out on the Japanese release that some of the tracks were released by Crue-L not Tratoria despite the name Tratoria Best

I've colored all the early tracks on this one green on this page so you can see how much of her early work you get on this release.

K.K.K.K.K.

98.7.15 Polydor cd: POCP-7296

Her second full length album

  1. One Thousand Twenty 20th Century Chairs
  2. What Are You Wearing?
  3. Qu'est-ce que tu veux?
  4. Clip Clap
  5. Kahimi Karie et moi
  6. Harmony Korine
  7. The Harder They Come
  8. The Symphonies Of Beethoven
  9. Orly-Narita
  10. What Is Blue?
  11. Kahimi au téléphone

The Symphonies Of Beethoven seems much more a Momus song for himself than a Karie song, not that its anywhere near as perverse as some of his other song's content when written for him to sing himself . It does manage to rhyme Dr. Robert Moog with nude, still I got the impression of "why is Karie singing this?"

Recently US released with 3 of the remixes below as bonuses: What Are You Wearing?, Symphonies of Beethoven [Add N to (X)], Only-Narita [Buffalo Daughter]

One Thousand 20th Century Chairs

1998 CD5: Polydor POCP-7297
  1. One Thousand 20th Century Chairs
  2. The Harder They Come (Crue-L Entertainment Mix)
  3. Harmony Korine (Dub)

I wanted to bring a copy of the book  One Thousand 20th Century Chairs to her live show, but I remembered wrong, I guess the title is ficticious and based on a Taschen book 1000 Chairs which I know about.

a K is a K is a K

Once Upon a Time

00.3.29 POCH-1913

5 Song EP recorded with Olivia Tremor Control. Short in length, fairly dense, not mainstream but not European sounding either.

  1. do you know the time?
  2. metaphors
  3. turtle song
  4. monsters
  5. lost in a paris nightclub

Journey to the Centre of Me

00.4.26 POCH-1927

Another EP this time with Momus. A lot of people have mixed feelings on this one. Some like it some don't. I think he's giving KK material that she doesn't always connect with unlike his earlier days of coming up with songs that she worked wonders with. "mistaken memories of medieval manhattan" was the title of an avant garde video made by Brian Eno in the early 1980s. I think Momus was living around this time in Manhattan, like Eno back then.

  1. the seventh wife of Henry VIII
  2. mistaken memories of medieval manhattan
  3. the lady of shalotte
  4. pygmalism
  5. journey to the centre of me

Tilt

00.5.24 POCH-1949

Many people guessed there would be a lot of overlap on her full album of 2000 and the last 2 mini albums, it turns out there is only a song from each. Different artists collaborate on different songs.

  1. I can't waut for Summr
  2. Je Dormais Sous La Neige
  3. SLEEPWALKING
  4. Pygmalism
  5. Ice Age Train
  6. Dear Boy
  7. Do You Know The Time
  8. Metaphors
  9. ?
  10. (We'll go) Separate Way
  11. kumuri
  12. Happy Birthday What Am I For?
  13. Lilas Theme

Early Band-- Fancy Face Groovy Name

Various Artists

Fab Gear

90.12.01 Polystar PSCR-1016

Fancy Face Groovy Name - apparently their only appearance on CD is one song on this compilation-Love is yé-yé (looking for my idol). The 2 singers in this band were a then unknown Kahimi Karie and Takako Minekawa who didn't keep using her faux french stage name, Mamene Kirerie. The rest of the band consists of the entire moonlighting Flipper's Guitar (key members Keigo Oyamada and Kenji Ozawa along with the rest of the band) who also appear on this rather rare but findable compilation. Apparently FFFN were a sort of hobby band and I suspect they got on the compilation for being friends of Flipper's Guitar. About half the acts are from the beginnings of the Shibuya-kei scene (including Bridge) and then the remainder are eclectic mostly UK acts like Momus and Louis Philippe.
