Overview

For students wishing to create interactive projects, this course will give a solid grounding in the design and execution of interactive and networked media artworks. Emphasis will be placed on studio practice using Flash ActionScript as the primary exploratory platform. Contemporary examples of interactive media will be deconstructed and critiqued. Incorporating video, audio, graphic imagery and typography within an interactive authoring environment will be examined. The course will consist of lecture, discussion, several short creative assignments and group critique.

Required Texts:
Motion Graphic Design and Fine Art Animation by Jon Krasner

Grading:
Grading will be based on in-class participation, two in-class presentations, class quiz(zes?) and homework assignments.

Your Responsibilities:
  • Completing all homework assignments —both readings and production assignments
  • Developing new multimedia work in this studio course
  • Alerting me if you feel you don't understand a concept, or you feel lost in the class

In-Class Presentations:
  1. You will be making a mid-semester presentation of your personal project
  2. You will make a final presentation of your work (this will be weighted most of all)

First assignment The "Solescape" group project will be a collaborative video based on the soles of sneakers (shoes). It is like an exquisite corpse: you will know the last frame of the previous segment, and the last frame of your 5 second segment will be known to the next person. One objective of this assigment is to practice synchronizing images with sound (provided). It is also intended to give students an idea of the range of working processes that they might want to explore in the course. Different students are bound to use very different processes to fill their 5 seconds. We will discuss the results in week two and refine the overall product during the second week.

Notes:

  1. No colors, just black/white and shades of grey
  2. First frame and final frame should be black/white only
  3. Each segment is 150 frames (5 seconds @ 30 frames per second)
  4. The pieces can be made with many different techniques, but they should use non-lossy file formats whenever possible
  5. Abstract imagery, please -- not characters, photos, or words
  6. Preliminary results due Sept. 11th. We will be refining these in week 2
  7. Please write down one of the procedures you used (on the card provided) if you feel you have done something clever/interesting/nice, etc.

The presentations should be short, roughly 5 minutes. The dates for your presentations will be given a little later.
